Exploring the waves of remote working

At this time, the choice whether or not to work remotely was taken out of the hands of most business owners. However, the way many businesses felt about remote working at first is very different to the way they feel now, weeks later. Having provided remote working solutions for many businesses during the current pandemic, we discuss the waves of remote working and how views on it have changed over the past weeks.

We consider the first month of lockdown as the first wave. It saw businesses scrambling to get their employees set up from home, with many businesses looking for new IT services as well as new phone systems and business mobiles to allow them to work remotely. This also included many businesses using new apps such as Enreach Meetings, WhatsApp and Zoom. This first wave was a rushed one, with many businesses that had never worked remotely before being unsure as to whether they would be able to work the same from home as they did in the office.

By the second month of working from home it seemed that businesses were beginning to look more long term. This meant proper training for their staff and considering long term telephony solutions. Many businesses looked to install a new business phone system that they can use from home, but also in the office when their business returns. This wave meant that businesses began to settle on the tools they were using, as opposed to having staff using various platforms to communicate. This made things much simpler for businesses, as their remote setups started to mirror their ‘normal’ setups.

As we look to enter the third wave of, we believe that many businesses will begin to look at the viability of working remotely in the long term, whether that be on a full time or part time basis, or giving their staff members the choice. Of course some people have struggled to work remotely and certain industries simply have to be in the office to work effectively, however many people have found that they actually prefer working remotely and having that greater flexibility. After all, many people argue that they work as efficiently at home and are able to achieve a greater work life balance. With the right telephony and IT, as well as  support from their team members, remote working is made simple.

It is possible that businesses will begin to look at the advantages of working from home such as; reducing travel time, reducing office costs and potentially even attracting new talented staff members. This could result in many businesses sticking with remote working.

One of the biggest drivers for the consideration of long-term remote working is new social acceptance. It’s now commonplace to be on a call and hear someone’s dog barking in the background. Perhaps, during a video call with colleagues, your children have run into shot. This is deemed the new normal and there is no stigma attached.

Whether your business chooses to continue with remote working after the lockdown, or whether you give your employees the option of flexible working, many businesses have seen positive results from remote working over the past two months.
