iOS vs Android for business

Friday, 15th November 2019

With Apple devices and their Android adversaries dominating the global smartphone market, our tech experts wanted to take a closer look at these operating system power houses to determine if one is better than the other when it comes to effectiveness and compatibility for business.

Focusing on areas such as security, hardware and cost, we look at the pros and cons of both systems to provide you with everything you need to make the right decision for your individual business mobile needs.

Regular, fast software updates

Perhaps one of the most notable advantages iOS has over Android, is the way in which they deliver their software updates, with Apple performing new updates on all devices, all at the same time, for up to six years. Although the older supported devices may not be able to house every single feature of the latest software, they will continue to benefit from improved functionality and security for as long as the hardware remains working. In regard to Android, only the Google Pixel phones and phones in the Android One program feature assured, prompt updates – and this is only applicable for two to three year from the release date of the device.

Better security and privacy

Even though security breaches have occurred for both operators in the past, iOS has proven to be the more secure option, with Apple delivering quick, regular updates to your device that pose no issues for your phone carrier, so if a security issue does arise, you can have it rectified with the next available update. Additionally, services like iMessage, FaceTime and iCloud make extensive use of encryption to protect data travelling to and from your phone and data stored on Apple servers.

Greater App selection

Although the app stores on both systems are impressive in regard to the vast array of choice they offer, apps typically come to Apple first, due to the fact that app developers make more money from featuring on the iOS store. Additionally, iOS has a larger selection of ‘pro’ apps for creating and editing images, video and audio.

Increased hardware diversity

Perhaps the most prominent advantage for Android is the hardware, with devices available in a variety of designs, including bigger screen options, extended battery life and even a physical keyboard. Additionally, if your phone maker of choice removes a feature that you still require, such as a headphone jack, you will be able to acquire it from elsewhere. With iOS, the design choices that Apple offer are your only choices.

Inclusive pricing

In comparison to iOS, Android phones provide greater flexibility on pricing. With flagship iPhones costing over £1,000 and older models costing over £600, it’s safe to say they sit exclusively in a high price bracket. In comparison, Android phones typically range from £200 to £1,000 with a number of the more affordable options even offering prompt software updates.

More storage options

A large majority of Android phones are equipped with a microSD card slot that allows you to expand the amount of internal storage available for apps, photos and videos. Additionally, you can use Google Drive space to store photos and documents. Apple’s iCloud service does allow you to offload photos and videos to save space, but you can’t add additional local storage. Plus, with Google’s free Google Drive tier, you’re provided with 15GB of cloud storage, in comparison to Apple’s 5 GB of cloud storage.
