The new normal: a look at working practices in 2021

Thursday, 28th January 2021

It’s a new year, with a new way of working! The changes we’ve gone through over the last year have paved the way for many businesses to successfully operate in new and exciting ways, and as a result, have created opportunities for even more success and growth!

With this in mind, we wanted to take a look at some of the key ways in which our working lives have evolved, and how these changes will impact us going forward, for the better!

Flexible and remote working is here to stay

Whilst the pandemic has seen many businesses adopting remote and flexible working policies to help maintain continuity, the extra business benefits that occurred were a welcome surprise! With less travel, the ability to focus and work in a chosen space, and the opportunity to build a better work/life balance, has meant that businesses have seen more productive and motivated staff.

What’s more, flexible and remote working has meant that there is now a huge emphasis on making sure businesses are equipped with the right communication solutions, to not only strengthen operations, but to also maximise their productivity and profitability. With the right tools, such as a cloud phone system, that is fully flexible, scalable, affordable and easy to use, businesses will never have to worry about staying connected and not being able to access all of their online resources and networks, even with staff working from multiple locations!

Plus, businesses have quickly realised that those with remote and flexible working policies not only keep their current employees happy, but they also have much better retention rates than other companies. So, if a business shows from the outset that they really value their staff and their needs, they’re guaranteed to attract top-tier talent and gain the competitive edge!

With remote and flexible working having so many advantages for both staff and businesses, it seems likely that these working practices are here to stay and will continue to develop and evolve, with more and more focus on making sure businesses can succeed under any circumstances!

Improved engagement and understanding

For remote and flexible working policies to succeed, there needs to be a clear understanding of exactly what each individual employee needs, to be able to comfortably and confidently do their jobs.

This has resulted in businesses working closely with their staff to make sure they have everything they need, but to also make sure they’re working to a schedule that allows them to be as productive and efficient as possible. Each role is unique, with a different purpose, so it makes sense that each individual member of staff will have different needs! For example, a Sales Consultant will most likely be travelling to meet clients, but also working from home or in the office. So, making sure they’re equipped with a range of communication solutions, such as a business mobile, a plug and play handset and a laptop, will enable them to work and stay connected with colleagues and customers, wherever they are. What’s more, making sure all of these devices are integrated, will create a unified communications experience, which results in even better flexibility and accessibility!

Together, when apart

With more and more people working from home or from different locations, regular, meaningful interactions between teammates are now more valuable than ever before. Luckily, we have a range of fantastic tools available to us that make this easy to achieve! What’s more, through the use of these solutions, such as video calling and instant messaging, we’re able to communicate in a way that email and even phone calls will never allow.

Through video calling, we’re able to see our colleagues, which instantly makes the experience more personable and dynamic. Being able to see a persons expression and body language leads to much better connections and a deeper understanding of what they’re saying, and also the intent behind it. With email, this just isn’t possible, and as a result, things can often get mis-interpreted, which then leads to a breakdown in communication. Even having the opportunity to take a pause and think about what you want to say, during a video call, can make such a difference to productivity levels! You’re much more likely to say exactly what you want, in the clearest way possible, and be able to provide further information instantly, if needed.

The same can be said for interactions with customers. By being able to talk face-to-face, you will gain a greater sense of exactly what they need and how you can achieve that. You’ll also be able to ask questions, listen to any query or concerns they may have, and provide solutions in a more relaxed and friendly manner. Being able to see the person you’re talking to is a powerful thing, and with customers, you’re sure to build strong, more proactive relationships with them and provide an even better service!
