Video calling etiquette – what to do for even better communication

However, with so many of us regularly taking part in video calls, bad habits may have developed and, as a result, our business communication skills may need a little re-tuning!

Make eye contact and be present

This one seems like a bit of a no-brainer, but it’s surprisingly easy to forget to do! On video calls, we can sometimes forget that we’re talking to actual people, rather than just images on a screen, so maintaining eye contact is vital to show you’re listening and present in the meeting. Eye contact also guarantees you’ll spot social cues and therefore be able to react and respond in a way that other forms of communication, such as email and phone calls, won’t allow.

Using nonverbal cues, such a nodding or shaking your head, smiling, and even laughter, allows you  to show your colleagues that you’re actively listening. Even if your microphone is on mute, they will be able to read your body language and will no doubt appreciate your attention!

Turn your camera on

We all have days when we don’t want to be on camera! However, unless there’s a really good reason for it, such as a poor connection or an unexpected interruption, regularly participating in video calls without your camera on, can make the whole experience feel quite isolating, which is the exact opposite of how you should feel in a video conference!

Showing your face in video calls will ultimately create a more personable and trusting relationship between you, your colleagues and customers. Being able to see one another also results in better interaction and collaboration overall, which leads to more productive and positive meetings!

Before you enter your meeting, be sure to check that you’re completely in frame, and if not, adjust your camera accordingly. No one wants to be talking to your forehead for the entirety of a video call! Also, check your surroundings are clear and free from anything you’re not comfortable showing on camera, be it a pile of washing, or dirty dishes!
